Association des jardins communautaires et du partage de nourriture du comté de Shelburne

The Community Garden and Food Share Association of Shelburne County was established to advance community efforts to address food insecurity in Shelburne.

Read the toolkit/playbook ! In collaboration with The Centre for Local Prosperity, Dr. Annika Voltan, a researcher at Saint Mary’s University Sobey School of Business, and Taylor Davies, a recent MBA graduate, the volunteer board members shared their story to help make this research project and playbook happen.

We were inspired by a community-led effort to address food insecurity in Shelburne, Nova Scotia. What started with an idea and conversations between a local municipal staff member and the Principal of the community college nearly a decade ago led to the completion of the town’s first greenhouse in 2026, operated by volunteers. This journey is not just about the construction of the greenhouse; it’s a story of how long-time residents, community newcomers and institutions came together to take matters into their own hands. There’s still a long road ahead, but a foundation of trust has been formed to build from.
